Trauma Informed Leadership

Vicarious trauma is real. It happens to the best of cops. You spend 25+ years seeing, hearing and experiencing the worst of the worst, hearing the stories of victims and it adds up. In the 21st Century, agencies are realizing the importance of investing in their personnel and their mental health. Many agencies have developed Employee Assistance Programs or put people in roles that serve as sounding boards within their agencies.
Successful leadership of public safety organizations requires an approach not required by past generations of executive management or front-line leadership. Current and aspiring leaders need to understand the impact of stress and trauma on employees and how exposures can impact not only their mental health, but also their physical wellbeing, cognitive function, and behaviors. This two-day course is designed to provide instruction that introduces the students to the biology of stress and trauma, how traumatic experiences can alter mental, physical, and cognitive functions, and overlay leadership practices through the lens of being trauma-informed.
This course is suited for public safety organizations regardless of mission, size, or type of jurisdiction. The ideal student for this course is any person in a formal or informal leadership role within their organization or who aspires to move into a formal leadership position at anytime in their career. The course is designed to be interactive and participants are encouraged to bring actual case studies with them that they can share and process in class to gain a real-world understanding of the concepts of the course.
Your instructor for this course is Police Chief Wayne Handley, a retired police Captain with 20+ years of law enforcement experience, a former Paramedic, and veteran of the United States Marine Corps, the Chief of Staff for a Sheriff’s Office with over 300 sworn deputies, and a doctoral candidate researching the impact of trauma and chronic stress on public safety employees. He is also a Licensed Professional Counselor (Resident) in Virginia. Wayne brings his practical experience, extensive training, and research to this class for the benefit of the student’s learning experience. This 2-day course will cover topics such as:
